Recycled tyres being used to resurface motorway

Millions of old tyres maybe recycled as a new road surface mix developed by Tarmac if a trial on the M1 by Highways England is successful.

A section of road between junctions 23 to 22 on the southbound carriageway of the M1 near Leicester has been laid with the new asphalt mix.

Using waste tyres in roads has both economic and environmental benefits, say variuos reports.

Some 40 million waste tyres are produced every year in the UK and over 500,000 disused tyres shipped out of the UK each year to be landfilled.
